A Tiger’s Smile: Behind the Scenes of Wildlife Dental Care at Denver Zoo

by Mary

On March 28, 2025, visitors to the Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance were treated to a rare and fascinating event—dental care for a tiger. Nikita, an Endangered Amur tiger, received expert treatment as part of her ongoing wellness plan. Dental health plays a critical role in overall care for animals, especially aging big cats like Nikita. Her procedure was made possible by the combined efforts of the Zoo’s Veterinary Medicine team and a special collaboration with Colorado State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Together, they ensured that Nikita received top-tier attention and care.

The need for dental intervention came to light during routine health monitoring. Nikita’s Animal Care Specialists had noticed signs that she was experiencing discomfort while chewing. Upon further examination, the veterinary team discovered that she was suffering from a condition known as tooth root resorption, a problem that also affects domestic cats. Because of the extent of the damage and to relieve her discomfort, the decision was made to extract the affected tooth.

To carry out the complex extraction, the Zoo’s medical team enlisted the help of Dr. Naomi Hoyer, a Board-Certified Veterinary Dentist from CSU. She was joined by a group of veterinary students, and together they worked at the Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Animal Hospital. Their joint effort exemplified the power of academic and zoological collaboration, particularly when treating sophisticated medical cases in exotic species.

While under anesthesia for the dental procedure, Nikita also received a comprehensive health evaluation. The team conducted blood tests, an ultrasound, and a full-body CT scan. These diagnostics allowed them to assess her internal health, monitor organ performance, and look for signs of aging. Proactive measures like these are especially vital for elderly animals, as they help prevent complications and support long-term well-being.

What made Nikita’s day at the hospital even more special was that it wasn’t just the medical team who got to witness it. Thanks to the facility’s advanced design, visitors were able to observe the procedure through floor-to-ceiling windows. Guest Engagement Facilitators were on hand to answer questions and provide insights, turning the event into a unique educational opportunity for the public. It was a compelling example of the dedication and expert care that animals receive at DZCA, much of which normally happens out of public view.

Thanks to the skilled hands and teamwork of all involved, Nikita made a swift recovery. She has since returned to her habitat, where she’s once again enjoying her environment, enrichment activities, and favorite meals. Although she now has one less molar, she’s more comfortable and healthier than ever—proof that even tigers benefit from a trip to the dentist.
